Chen Kun and Zhou Xun’s New Film – The Yin Yang Master, Hits the Big Screens

The Yin Yang Master is a 2021 film adaptation of the acclaimed role-play mobile game Onmyoji: Master of Yin and Yang. It premieres in cinemas today and should not be mistaken for Deng Lun and Mark Chao’s version that aired last year. That one was a first part adaptation of the novel series titled Onmyoji by Yumemakura Baku. The stories have similarities, but this new movie is from a different director, production company, and cast.

Synopsis – The world is on the verge of a devastating war with monsters trying to retrieve the Scaling Stone. Yin Yang Master Qing Ming’s life is in danger, which leads him on a journey to different worlds in preparation for the upcoming assaults. During his voyage, Qing Ming finds that the key to stopping all the calamities is embracing his human and monster hybrid identity (source – Netflix).

Now here’s a more detailed summary provided on imdb.com – Captain of the City Guard, Yuan Boya, is stripped of his rank after failing to guard an imperial tribute. Unwilling to let things lie, he searches for the thieves that stole the tribute, only to end up entering a mystical world of demons. Along the way, he becomes mixed up in a feud between the Yin Yang Master Qing Ming, humans and the demon worlds. Yuan Boya and Qing Ming’s relationship grows from mutual distaste to grudging respect, and eventually, they establish an unbreakable bond of master and familiar. The two work together to solve an old mystery and prove Qing Ming’s innocence while also unravelling a conspiracy to bring the Demon King back from the dead. (I’m not too confident of this summary’s accuracy since anyone can edit the imdb.com site.)

Main cast list for The Yin Yang Master:

We have one of my favourite Chinese actors ever, Chen Kun as Qin Ming, the yin yang master/Seimei

Zhou Xun as Bai Ni/Yao Bikuni

William Chan as Ci Mu

Claudia Wang as the Peach blossom fairy

Shen Yue as Shen Le/Kagura

Cici Wang as the Snow lady –

Wang Yue Yi as the Butterfly monster

And finally, Shaw Qu as Yuan Bo Ya/Hiromasa.

This stellar cast for The Yin Yang Master truly excites me, and I’m equally eager to get more insight into the world of Onmyoji. I’ve never played the game, but I have seen the 2020 animated series. Sadly, the anime episodes were too short; hence I’m very thankful for these live-actions that allow me to dive more into this intriguing fantasy world. Since Netflix also picked up the international distribution for this version, I’ll wait to watch both the 2020 and 2021 adaptation together. As of now, there’s no official date for the international release since this film just started airing in China.

To close this post, here are all the teasers/trailers for The Yin Yang Master. I saved them for last just in case anyone prefers to go into a movie without knowing what sort of visuals to expect, so watch at your discretion –

William Chan and Yang Mi In A Drama Together??? WOW!!!😳

🗣🗣 I AM READY!!!

Chinese historical fantasy drama titled Novoland: Pearl Eclipse officially announced their lead cast in William Chan and Yang Mi. They also released the first character posters, even though the drama just started production.

Whoever decided to cast these two is a genius. William Chan and Yang Mi look regal and perfect together. I am a major William fan, and Yang Mi always slays historical fantasies, so I am LIVING for this pairing right now. img_5526_original

WOW!!! He always looks stunning with his hair up in historical dramas. I remember watching Lost Love in Times and losing my mind whenever William appeared🤩. Just look at this man –

Okay, back to Novoland: Pearl Eclipse. From what I know, there isn’t a definite release date yet, but it will air this year. It is set to run for 40 episodes.

Here is the synopsis 👉🏼 During the Zheng dynasty in the vast ocean of Novoland, the slaughter of the Merfolk is caused by the search for a magical pearl that could only be obtained from a young Naga girl’s tears. For this reason, Hai Shi lost her parents and her whole Yu coastal village. During Hai Shi’s most critical moment, she met Fang Zhu, the first official of the imperial court, and she became his disciple. Not long after, Zheng dynasty’s imperial court falls into great chaos. Emperor Chi Zhong Xu seems to be unable to keep the order in his court and looks like a self-indulgent ruler. But the persistent support from Fang Zhu allows the nation to see a new time of peace. Hai Shi becomes the personal guard of the emperor, and she starts to be interested in him. When the emperor discovers that Hai Shi is a girl, he starts having feelings for her. Hai Shi will have to face her own feelings towards Fang Zhu and the Emperor. (source – My DramaList)

Other members of the cast include:

– Xu Kaichengimg_5540He seems to be playing the role of Emperor Chi Zhong Xu. I have seen him in Well Intended Love 1 & 2 and The Love Knot: His Excellency’s First Love, so I’m looking forward to what he brings to this drama.

– Chen Xiao Yunimg_5541She is the only new face for me. Her costume is beautiful. I love the gold embroidery and her crown.

– Wilson Wang img_5542His face is familiar. I believe he was in the 2017 medical drama – Surgeons. That drama is one of my faves, and I have gone back to rewatch it a good number of times.img_5561

– Yuan Yu Xuan img_5543I have also seen her a few times in The Flame’s Daughter, Legend of Fu Yao, and Eternal Love of Dream.

I am really excited about this series, so I hope the filming runs smoothly and that all the actors and crew members stay safe on set. I’ll continue to keep you all updated.

So who else thrilled about this casting news for Novoland: Pearl Eclipse???

Adoring: Chinese Movie Review

Adoring is a 2019 Chinese film that features people of different ages in the company of their loyal pets as they give love, receive love, discover love and learn to love again. Vivienne is a veterinarian that also runs a pet shop. She looks after the well being of all the pets in the community, and even witnesses six heartwarming stories about the people and the pets they adore.

Expectations: I saw the trailer while scrolling through Instagram earlier today, and I quickly looked for a site to watch the full film. Honestly, I am not an animal lover, but there are a few times when I do find cats adorable. All the same, I am a sucker for love. Whether it be the love of animals or another person, I am here for all of it.😊😊

Review:

I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this film. It was beautiful and filled with love from beginning to end. The bond between the pets and their owners was incredible. Every actor did a fantastic job of bringing their character and relationship with their pets to life. I felt every emotion they expressed, I laughed with them, and cried, as in genuinely cried with them. Also, the acting from the animals was remarkable. I could tell that they were well trained. They even made me reconsider the idea of having a pet. How could such little beings have a vital impact on someone’s life? Adoring is definitely not the most epic film I have seen, but the heartwarming feeling it gave me is truly memorable.

To dive more into the story, let’s look into each pet and their owners,

(warning – spoilers ahead)

  • Zhao Yue and Fang Xin with Seven – img_3314This couple was always lovey-dovey and funny. I loved their chemistry, and I live for William Chan in funny and charming roles. It was amusing whenever he begged Seven (the dog) to let him spend time alone with Fang Xin. Seven truly loved Fang Xin, and he always protected her, so I felt sad watching him in pain. The scene where Fang Xin asked, “who loves me the most?” broke my heart. Including the last moments between him and Zhao Yue, I was tear-bending throughout the entire scene😭😭😭😭. I couldn’t imagine the pain of losing a pet that has accompanied you for almost all your life. Yet I believe that their story shows the beauty of companionship. Seven will forever remain Fang Xin’s best friend.

  • Chen Yue Yun and Jiang Nan with Zha –img_3313At first, I thought it was going to be the typical romance trope, but they focused more on the friendship aspect. I love how Nan encouraged Yue Yun. You know you’ve found a true one when they go out of their way to fulfill anything for you. Everyone needs a friend like Nan. Yue Yun also cared for Nan, but he was dealing with a lot. I am glad that he found the courage to continue school. The scene where Zha (the dog) was leading him to school was very emotional. Just seeing the love and support he got from everyone around him gave me major feels. Independence is a great accomplishment, but it’s also okay to lean on others once in a while.

  • Cao Wende with Barton –img_3310This was another funny but heartwarming relationship. Right from the start, I knew that Barton was a brilliant dog. At first, when the dog catchers showed up, I died laughing from how serious they were about the mission. It felt like they were on some 007 spy case🤣🤣🤣. However, after knowing Barton’s story, my reaction took a more serious tone. I am happy that they all came together to help get Barton off the streets. Thankfully, the dog eaters did not get to him first. I like how the relationship between these two developed. Barton and Wende showed the importance of trust and learning to love again.

  • Gao Ming and Gao Meng Meng with Angela/Hulu –img_3311This was another set that made me cry. Most notably, during their scene at the airport. The way she calls him “dummy daddy” was cute but also hilarious to me. At first, I thought Gao Ming was trying to get his wife and daughter to stay back with him, but later on, I realized that he was only trying to keep Hulu (the cat). To him, Hulu was the only person he had left, and that was also his primary connection to his daughter after the divorce. I am glad that he was able to resolve his relationship with Meng Meng, and he even got to keep Hulu. Everyone needs love and company.

  • Li Xiang and Qu Fei Fei with Bell –img_3312I can understand why he didn’t want Fei Fei to know about Bell (the pig). She wasn’t exactly the most conventional pet. All the same, I was still kind of pissed at how Fei Fei reacted to the situation. At first, when Bell kept on misbehaving, I had two guesses. She was either seeking Li Xiang’s attention, or somehow she was trying to help Fei Fei, and I was partially right. I am so glad Bell came back home safely because if she actually got slaughtered, their relationship would have gown downhill. By the end of everything, Fei Fei came to appreciate Bell more. Honestly, the way she rushed to hug Bell shows that she might even love the pet more than Li Xiang😂😂😂.

  • Luo Hua and An Ying with 726 –img_3309Throughout their scenes, all I could say was, “Aww, the kitten is so adorable.” I couldn’t resist the cuteness😍😍😍. Anyways, An Ying’s case shows that if someone is truly meant for you, no matter how abruptly they come into your lives, they will leave a significant impact. An Ying has mysophobia, so 726 (the kitten) was never in her plan. She simply liked Luo Hua, but because of him, she had to learn to share her space. Even though her first time taking care of 726 was frustrating, she opened up later on. So I guess in her case, she discovered a new kind of love.

Like I mentioned from the beginning, this was really a heartwarming film. Therefore my rating for Adoring is 10/10.
