Synopsis: Set in the mid-1920s. A young police officer named Qiao Chu Sheng is on the trail of a devious killer. Realizing that the police force could need some extra help with the case, he decides to reach out to a brilliant young man who recently returned from studying in Great Britain. To round off the team, he also enlists the help of Bai You Ning, a female reporter for a daily newspaper. This trio will form a small detective squad that specializes in solving strange and unsettling murder mysteries.

Expectations: I saw Hu Yi Tian and decided to check out the trailer. It seemed promising, so I planned to watch it as my pass time drama. The posters for this series are quite pretty, so I’ll include my favourites at the end of this post.

Review:

I am going to make this a quick review.

This was a very lighthearted and engaging crime-thriller drama. The story was captivating from beginning to end. The acting was perfect, and the cinematography is beautiful. This drama marks my first time seeing Hu Yi Tian in such a hilarious role, and he nailed every scene as Lu Yao. I also enjoyed the dynamics between the three leads. Their interactions were funny, fresh, and they came off to me like the three musketeers. Lu Yao is the brains of the team. Bai You Ning is the informant, and Qiao Chu Sheng is the physical strength and power for the group.

I appreciate how the cases in this show were handled. We got to see so many solved over 2 – 3 episodes instead of just one case being dragged for half of the series. I love the continuous resolve because it made me want to watch each new episode immediately. Now some cases were predictable, and the criminals gave up way too easily, but because it was a fun and fast-paced series, these minor letdowns didn’t matter much to me.

I absolutely did not enjoy how Lu Yao’s family kept trying to control his life. His sister’s actions were quite extreme if you ask me.

Moving on, I feel most people were not in support of Bai You Ning and Lu Yao’s relationship. Personally, I think that it was a clear game right from the first few episodes. There were hints from other characters at first. Then midway through the series, I could see the signs of a relationship from Lu Yao and Bai You Ning’s interactions when they were alone. So excuse me if I was excited about them getting together. I enjoyed watching the little cute and cheesy moments. Yes, Bai You Ning started out very annoying, but she became a great asset to the team. She provided must of the background information that helped Lu Yao understand each murder victim better. Hence why I came to terms with her character. Plus, I love her boldness and her ability to go for what she wants.

Although I started this series as just a pass time, It quickly became my number one go-to because I genuinely enjoyed myself whenever I was watching it. There was never a dull moment, and it put me in a good mood all the time. I lived for Lu Yao’s greed for money.😂😂😂😂 Also, I had an eye candy like Inspector Qiao Chu Sheng to stare at.😍 He is so good-looking, and his smile is adorable. I died whenever he had on the police uniform. I was so sad that they didn’t give him a permanent love interest, but with the way things ended, it looks like there’s a possibility for a second season.

The opening and closing theme songs for this drama are top-notch. I never skipped the intro, and if not for Viki that automatically takes you to the next episode, I wouldn’t mind watching the closing montage as well.

“Wake Up” by Juno Su: The other song is “Enigma” by After Journey but there’s no official music video for it. Both songs are actually available on Spotify –

I already recommended this series to a friend, and she really enjoyed it. She gave it a 10/10. So I do have a double backing.
